Kelty Redwing 44

Kelty Redwing 44 backpack front three-quarter view on dark background
44L Panel-Load U-Zip Side Sleeves Carry-on Friendly Hydration Ready
Overview

A do-everything 44L with pockets where you want them and side sleeves that punch way above their weight.

This pack has been a repeat buy for me and a go-to gift. Organization is dialed - quick-grab front pocket, clean main compartment, and the secret sauce: side pockets with an extra full-length sleeve behind them. I can slot a tent or a tripod in the sleeve and still use the zip pocket for bottles or stakes. It rides well, takes a beating, and fits clean in overheads.

For Hawaii weekends, Utah runs, or a two-to-three day trip, 44 liters is money. Big enough to bring what you actually use, small enough to move fast and not fight the bag.

Best for 2-3 day trips, fly-and-go weekends, organized packers who love external sleeves.
Not for Ultralight hikers counting grams or alpine loads that need a beefier frame.

The side-sleeve plus pocket combo is the reason to buy - tent in the sleeve, bottle in the pocket, zero drama.

My Notes

I have owned variants of this bag and keep coming back to the 44. The sleeves behind the side pockets are the win - I can stash a tent or jacket in the sleeve and still use the pocket for bottles. It has held up great on flights to Hawaii and road trips in Utah. Packs clean, carries right, no nonsense.

  • Tip: Pack the tent body in a tight roll for the side sleeve. Poles go opposite side for balance.
  • Carry: Tighten load-lifters first, then hipbelt, then shoulder straps - makes a big difference.
