Coleman Steel Belted Cooler

Coleman steel belted cooler in vintage green
54 qt Steel belted 2-3 day ice Truck camp cooler
Overview

This is my default camp cooler when I am not trying to win an ice contest, I just want cold food that survives the weekend.

Packed with a block and a bag of ice, it has done 2-3 day runs in Arizona heat without turning everything into soup. It is not a giant roto tub and it is not a cheap box store cooler either. It sits in a nice middle spot where you can actually move it when it is full and it still feels solid when you slam the lid.

The steel shell takes real abuse in the bed of the truck, the latch feels like a real latch, and the whole thing cleans up quick once you are back in the driveway. It looks good in camp photos and it does not feel disposable.

Best for Weekend car camping, lake days, tailgates, and trip stacks where you want one cooler that can live in the truck full time.
Not for Week long ice retention bragging rights or ultralight setups where every pound gets argued about.

If you want one cooler that feels like a piece of kit instead of a big plastic bin, this is the one that keeps coming with me.

My Notes
  • Rides in the back of the truck with toolboxes and bins and does not care. The dings just make it look better.
  • For summer desert trips, I treat it like a fridge: drinks in one half, food in the other, and try not to stand there with the lid open.
  • The size is a sweet spot. Big enough you are not playing cooler Tetris every meal, small enough two people can still move it when it is loaded.
  • If you like old Coleman stoves and lanterns, this cooler just fits that whole vibe.
