Overview

The classic Rim lake: tall pines, a small marina, and multiple campgrounds within walking distance of the water.

Woods Canyon Lake is a go-to for easy paddling and cool summer temps. Expect well-spaced sites in the pines, stocked-trout weekends, and busy ramp hours. Aim for sunrise and sunset on the water and a lazy mid-day at camp.

Camping here is developed (think tables, rings, toilets). Dispersed options exist farther from the Rim Lakes complex—follow the MVUM and posted signs.

Why go
Cooler temps, easy paddling, and family-friendly lakeside loops.
Watch out for
Weekend crowds, tight parking near the ramp, and afternoon wind on the water.

If you want quiet, book midweek and launch at first light.

Getting There

From AZ-260 near Forest Lakes, follow signs to the Rim Lakes area and Woods Canyon Lake. Roads are paved and well signed; go slow for elk and cyclists.

  1. Book a lake-adjacent loop (Aspen or Spillway) if you want quick launches.
  2. Parking at the ramp is limited—arrive early and keep your kit minimal.
  3. Afternoon wind can stack up—plan paddles for mornings/evenings.

Busy weekends: launch at dawn, nap at noon, sunset lap after dinner.

Reminders
  • Pack a PFD for every paddler, including SUPs.
  • Bear-aware storage; keep food out of tents & vehicles locked.
  • Respect quiet hours—sound carries through the pines.
  • Bring cash for wood/fees; cards aren’t guaranteed.
Camping Info
  • Where to camp: Aspen CG & Spillway CG are the main lakeside loops; both have tables, rings, and vault toilets.
  • Hookups: None. Generators allowed only during posted hours.
  • Fires: Only when legal; drown/cold-out and pack out trash.
  • Boating: Best for kayaks, SUPs, canoes; small motor rules may apply.
  • Wildlife: Ravens and chipmunks will raid open food—secure everything.
My Notes

I book midweek, pick a site with afternoon shade, and treat the day like two short sessions on the water. The lake is mirror-calm at first light; by lunch the ramp’s a zoo.

  • Comfort: A small tarp or awning transforms camp at 7,500'.
  • Food: Keep snacks simple for quick pre-dawn launches.
  • Photos: Golden hour on the west shore lights the rock just right.
