Overview
Camp among ‘ōhi‘a and cooled lava near the rim of Kīlauea—cool nights, misty mornings, and otherworldly terrain.
Two front-country campgrounds serve the summit region: Nāmakanipaio (managed with the Volcano House, grassy sites under tall eucalyptus/’ōhi‘a) and Kulanaokuaiki (quiet drive-in down Chain of Craters Road—no water, fewer people). Backcountry permits open coastal sites and high cabins when conditions allow.
Weather flips fast—fog, drizzle, and wind are common. Air quality can change with eruptions and trades; check current park alerts before committing to a site.
Bring a real rainfly and warm layers—this is high country compared to the coast.
