Woods Canyon Lake from Spillway Campground

Overview

Pocket-size loops in tall pines with quick steps to Woods Canyon Lake - shade, cool air, and easy water access.

Spillway sits near the lakeshore around 7,500 ft. Sites have tables and rings, you can walk to the water or hop straight onto the Woods Canyon loop trail, and mornings are often glassy and quiet.

It is a developed campground with potable water and vault toilets. Weekends are popular in summer. Boats on Woods Canyon are quiet - electric trolling motors only.

Why go Lakeside shade, stocked fishing, and fast access to Rim overlooks and nearby lake loops.
Watch out for Weekend demand, monsoon gusts, and tighter pads that favor tents and smaller trailers.

For less foot traffic, choose a site set back from the ramp and day-use path.

Getting There

From AZ-260, turn onto FR 300 near the Rim Visitor Center, then follow signs to FR 105 for Woods Canyon Lake/Spillway.

  1. Watch for elk along 260 and 300 at dawn and dusk.
  2. Arrive early on weekends - the ramp and day-use lot get busy.
  3. Monsoon afternoons bring wind - guy out tents and canopies.
Camping Info
  • Pads & size: tables and rings; best for tents and smaller trailers.
  • Water & toilets: potable water and vault restrooms in season.
  • Boats: electric-motor only; fishing is a main draw.
  • Trails: the Woods Canyon loop passes right by camp.
  • Wildlife: osprey and eagles work the shoreline - secure food.
My Notes

I like a site with a short walk to the water but not on the main path - quieter at night, quick at sunrise. Coffee, then a slow lap on the lake trail.

  • Wind etiquette: guy the fly and pin the canopy.
  • Cooking: butane single-burner + windscreen; save the grill for calm evenings.
  • Photos: blue hour through the trees - tripod if you want reflections.
