Overview

A backup plan that turned into a memory. Red cliffs, real cold, and a van heater that earned its reputation.

I wound up at Red Rock Park after finding the mountain campsites snowed out. A big winter storm was rolling through and it was extremely cold. It snowed hard, the van froze over, and the whole campground turned quiet in that way it does when the weather is serious.

This is a developed campground tucked right up against the red rock formations outside Gallup. Sites are easy pull-ins with a picnic table and a fire ring. When the sun is out, it is a beautiful place to camp. When the weather is ugly, it is still a solid place to land.

Why go
Scenic red cliffs, simple pull-in sites, and enough amenities to make bad weather survivable.
Watch out for
Winter storms can hit hard. Wind, snow, and fast temperature drops are real out here.

If you ever wanted a campsite that looks dramatic without requiring a dramatic setup, this is a good one.

Getting There

Red Rock Park is an easy stop right off I-40. It feels close to town, but the cliffs make it feel separate once you are parked.

  1. From I-40, take the exit for Church Rock / NM-118 and follow signs toward Red Rock Park.
  2. Drive into the park and turn into the campground area. Main and West campground are both on site.
  3. If weather is moving in, pick a site that blocks wind. The cliffs help, but not everywhere.

Reservations are required before you park in a site. If you are rolling in late, book online first.

Before You Go
Reminders
  • Cold weather setup matters here. Wind + elevation can surprise you.
  • Book ahead. This is not a “pay in the morning” campground.
  • Bring a headlamp. Nights feel darker against the cliffs.
  • If you travel with dogs, this place is social. Keep manners tight.
  • Do not assume you will have solid cell service in every spot.

My Notes

I ended up here after the mountain campsites were snowed out, right in the middle of a big winter storm. It was extremely cold. Snow came down hard, the van froze over, and the diesel heater worked double duty keeping the inside toasty warm.

  • Ghost: had a blast running around with several other friendly dogs roaming the area.
  • Sites: easy pull-ins with a picnic table and fire ring. Simple setup, even when the weather is trying to punish you.
  • Scenery: beautiful area nestled right against the red rock mountains. Even in a storm, it looks unreal.
  • Cold weather: this was one of those nights where you are grateful your gear works.
