Overview

Tall pines, cool air, and a simple developed loop close to Rim overlooks and Woods Canyon country.

Mogollon Campground feels like classic Rim forest - filtered light, a bit of breeze, and that dry pine smell as soon as you step out of the truck. Pads have tables and rings, there’s potable water in season and vault toilets, and you’re a short drive to lakes and viewpoint pullouts.

It’s popular on summer weekends. Arrive early if you want shade and privacy, and bring extra stakes - monsoon gusts can rattle canopies in the afternoon.

Why go
Shaded developed camping with easy access to Woods Canyon & Willow Springs Lakes plus Rim overlooks.
Watch out for
Weekend demand, tight maneuvering for longer rigs, and afternoon wind during monsoon season.

Pick a site tucked a row off the main loop for quieter evenings and morning birdsong.

Getting There

From Payson, head east on AZ-260 toward the Mogollon Rim. Follow signs for the campground and nearby lake turnoffs; final approach is on graded forest roads.

  1. Watch for elk along 260 at dawn and dusk.
  2. Air down the noise - dust and weekend traffic are common near lake junctions.
  3. Walk loops before committing if you’ve got a longer trailer - some pads turn tight.
Camping Info
  • Sites: tables, rings, and the usual Rim shade; best for tents and smaller trailers.
  • Water & toilets: potable water in season; vault toilets.
  • Fires: in rings only when restrictions allow.
  • Nearby: boat rentals and shore fishing at Woods Canyon; overlooks along Rim Rd (FR 300).
  • Cell: generally workable near the highway; spottier deeper in the pines.
My Notes

I aim for a site with afternoon shade and a short walk to the trail. Friendly vibe, lots of families. Mornings are calm - coffee, then a quick drive to the Rim for that first light.

  • Wind: guy the fly - gusts sneak in from the west.
  • Cooking: butane single-burner + windscreen = easy dinners.
  • Photos: blue hour under the pines, or sunrise at one of the overlooks off FR 300.
