Pine shade, picnic tables, and quick town access - an easy Payson basecamp that still feels like the forest.

Houston Mesa sits just north of Payson along Houston Mesa Rd. Sites have tables and rings and sit under tall ponderosa. It is close enough for a coffee run or ice, far enough that nights stay quiet. Expect mixed loops, weekend demand, and typical Rim Country temps that drop after dark.

Shaded developed camping minutes from town - good for quick trips and kid friendly weekends.
Watch out for
Peak weekend traffic, summer fire restrictions, and afternoon gusts through the pines.

Getting There

From downtown Payson, head north on AZ-87 and turn right on Houston Mesa Rd. Follow signs for the campground - the entrance is on the right and the loops are well signed.

  1. Turn onto Houston Mesa Rd from AZ-87 and drive a few minutes north.
  2. Watch for the campground entrance on the right - pay kiosk at the gate when staffed.
  3. Loop once to scout shade and wind cover - interior sites are usually calmer.
