Overview
A beautiful high-country lake campground where clear water, green forest, and cool mountain air make the long drive from Phoenix feel completely justified.
Haviland Lake sits about 18 miles north of Durango in the San Juan National Forest. The campground is tucked into ponderosa pine and aspen near the shore, with the Hermosa Cliffs rising across the water. Coming from 115-degree Phoenix, stepping into weather in the 60s felt unreal.
The lake was the real shock: clean, clear, and surrounded by actual green country. I bought a Colorado fishing license and never found the time to cast, but the accessible shoreline, fishing dock, and no-wake water make a return trip easy to justify.
Best version of the trip: stay long enough to fish, walk the Forebay Lake Trail, and let the cool air reset your whole nervous system.
