Overview

Easy dispersed pine camping west of Flagstaff, with lots of pullouts, quick town access, and weather-dependent road conditions.

FR 171 is a graded forest road with countless pull-outs and short spurs to flat pads. Shade is good, wind is lighter than lakeside, and you are still a quick drive into town for supplies. It is classic Northern Arizona dispersed camping - tables and toilets are on you, and fire rules change with the season.

Best for
Vehicle camping, quick Flagstaff escapes, shaded dispersed sites, big-sky nights, and flexible arrivals.
Watch out for
Muddy ruts after monsoons or snowmelt, weekend traffic, and dust from passing trucks.

Best version of the trip: pick a higher gravel pad before rain, stay out of ruts, and keep the setup compact.

Getting There

From I-40, use Flagstaff Ranch Rd or A-1 Mountain exits and follow forest signs to FR 171. Drive the main road and scout spurs signed for dispersed camping.

  1. Stay on the main graded road until you spot established pads or rock fire rings.
  2. Avoid deep ruts and soft shoulders after storms.
  3. Leave room for turnarounds - big rigs can box themselves in on tight spurs.

  • Dispersed: no tables, toilets, or trash service - you bring the infrastructure.
  • Stay limits: follow posted 14-day stay rules for the district.
  • Ground: mix of cinders, dirt, and rock; some pads slope more than they look.
  • Noise: generally quiet at night, but you will hear the odd truck or side-by-side on weekends.
  • Leave No Trace: use existing pads and rings, bury or pack out waste, and scatter unused firewood.
My Notes

I like ridge-side pullouts with a bit of breeze - fewer bugs, big stars. If the forecast shows gusts, park the van to block the kitchen and stake the awning hard.
