Overview

Ponderosa shade, easy approach, and a mellow loop close to Mormon Lake.

Double Springs is a simple win: level pads, tall pines, and just enough separation that evenings feel calm even when the loop is busy. It’s my go-to when I want structure—tables, rings, and posted quiet hours—without losing the forest vibe.

You’re close to Lake Mary and Mormon Lake turnouts, so day trips are easy. Expect cool nights, afternoon breezes, and elk traffic at dawn if you’re lucky.

Why go
Shade, organized loop, and fast access from Flagstaff.
Watch out for
Weekend crowding, seasonal water, and wind through the pines.

Perimeter sites with understory feel more private—corners are money.

Getting There

From Flagstaff, take Lake Mary Road (FH 3) toward Mormon Lake. Double Springs is signed; follow the spur to the loop.

  1. Top off water/ice in town—treat spigots as seasonal.
  2. Mind elk and cyclists on FH 3; cell coverage is patchy.
  3. Check the kiosk for fire status, quiet hours, and any closures.

Friday arrivals fill fast—weeknight turnover is your best bet for first-come snags.

My Notes

I treat Double Springs like a quiet basecamp: coffee in the shade, mid-day lake cruise, back for golden hour under tall pines.

  • Timing: Weeknights stay mellow; Friday fills quick.
  • Setup: Ground mat + tarp = dust control and a clean kitchen.
  • Wind: Stake the canopy—afternoon breeze is standard here.
