Overview

A full-service Verde Valley basecamp with hookups, showers, lagoons, trails, and Cottonwood close enough to keep the trip easy.

Dead Horse Ranch is the easy button for Verde Valley trips. Sites sit on gentle hills above three fishing lagoons with views toward Mingus and the red rocks. The loops are organized, the pads are level, and the bathhouses make it a strong pick when comfort matters as much as location.

It is central to everything - Jerome, Sedona, Tuzigoot, Old Town Cottonwood - and you can still launch a kayak or walk a riparian trail without moving the truck. Summers are hot; winters are mild and quiet.

Best for
Hookups, showers, family trips, lagoon walks, Cottonwood/Jerome days, and low-friction Verde Valley camping.
Watch out for
Weekend demand, summer heat, and occasional wind over the open flats.

Best version of the trip: camp here for comfort, then use the mornings for lagoons and the afternoons for Verde Valley side trips.

Getting There

From AZ-89A in Cottonwood, turn onto Dead Horse Ranch Rd and follow signs into the park (fee station at entrance). Roads are paved and well signed to the campground loops and lagoons.

  1. Stop at the entry station for passes and site info.
  2. Follow signs to your loop: Roadrunner, Quail, or Cooper's Hawk.
  3. Walk or drive to the lagoons for fishing, paddling, and sunset color.
Camping Info
  • Sites: level pads, shade varies by loop; many pull-throughs for longer rigs.
  • Facilities: modern restrooms with hot showers, potable water, dumpsters, dump station.
  • Activities: three fishing lagoons, Verde River access, long trail network, MTB connectors.
  • Noise: generally quiet at night; day use areas get busy.
My Notes

Easy base for a mixed-bag weekend: coffee walk around the lagoons, late-morning Jerome, sunset at the Tuzigoot ridge. Bring shade and a light paddle craft if you have it - the lagoons are perfect for a slow lap before dinner.

  • Summer plan: early and late outside, midday in the shade.
  • Photo tip: golden hour reflections off the calm lagoon water; bring a CPL if you have one.
  • Food: Old Town Cottonwood is minutes away if dinner at camp starts feeling like unnecessary work.
Choose It / Skip It
Good fit
You want Verde Valley access with showers, hookups, lagoons, and enough structure for an easy family or mixed-comfort trip.
Bad fit
You want a forested campsite, a cool summer escape, or a place that feels removed from town. This is a practical state-park basecamp, not a quiet backroad camp.
