Overview

A quieter Rim Lakes campground with good shade and easy access to the water without camping right in the middle of the busiest lake traffic.

Crook is one of those campgrounds that feels easy in a good way. Tall pines, decent spacing, straightforward developed sites, and a location that puts you close to Woods Canyon, Willow Springs, and the big overlooks without feeling jammed directly onto a shoreline.

It is not flashy, but it is useful. If the plan is cool weather, a little lake time, and a camp that does not make you work too hard, this is a solid one.

Why go
Shade, elevation relief, and a good central position for the Rim Lakes corridor.
Watch out for
Busy weekends, spotty cell service, and fast-changing weather once storms start building.

Pick shade first, then use the location to bounce between lakes and overlooks without a long haul every time.

Getting There

From Payson, head east on AZ-260 into the Rim Lakes corridor and follow signage for Crook Campground. It is an easy approach, which is part of why this whole stretch gets so much use.

  1. Keep your eyes open for elk early and late. That drive can get western fast.
  2. Pick your loop based on shade and site spacing more than anything else.
  3. On peak weekends, get there early or expect slim pickings.
Camping Info
  • Developed: tables, rings, and a more straightforward setup than dispersed alternatives nearby.
  • Noise: usually pretty mellow once evening settles in.
  • Weather: afternoon gusts and monsoon storms can come on fast.
  • Nearby: quick access to the lakes, fishing spots, and Rim viewpoints without much driving.
My Notes

Crook feels like a practical choice, which is not a bad thing. It is one of those places where you can get up there, settle in fast, and spend the rest of your energy on the better parts of the trip - lakes, light, weather, and getting out of the heat.

  • Strategy: lake time earlier, overlooks later, camp in the middle.
  • Cooking: this is a good place for simple meals and an easy camp rhythm.
  • Photos: better payoff around the corridor than inside camp itself, especially after weather moves through.
