A lively creekside campground near Payson with tall pines, cold water, and a social weekend energy that is part of the appeal.

Christopher Creek is a good-time campground. It is developed, easy to get to, and busy for a reason. You get water nearby, good tree cover, and a location that works as a simple escape from Phoenix without needing to commit to a long drive deeper into Rim country.

This is not a remote-feeling place on a summer weekend. It is active, kid-filled, and friendly. If that sounds good, it really works. If you want peace and empty space, go midweek or shoulder season.

Best for
Creek time, families, quick Phoenix escapes, social weekends, and campers who want shade without driving deeper onto the Rim.
Watch out for
Weekend crowds, tighter parking in some loops, and more campground noise than the higher Rim spots.

Best version of the trip: lean into the creek and shade, then expect people instead of pretending it will be silent.

Getting There

From Payson, take AZ-260 east and follow the signed turn for Christopher Creek. It is an easy drive, which is a big part of why this place stays so popular.

  1. Inside the loops, slow down. There are usually people walking, biking, and kids moving around camp.
  2. Creekside or more shaded pads go fastest.
  3. If the lower area feels packed, the upper loops can be a little calmer.
Camping Info
  • Developed: tables, rings, restrooms, and a more social campground feel.
  • Creek: one of the main reasons to stay here - just watch slick rocks and supervision around kids.
  • Noise: more active than the quieter high-country campgrounds.
  • Wildlife: ravens and critters will absolutely check any lazy food storage.
My Notes

I had a really good time here. It was busy, but not in an annoying way. People were friendly, the creek made the whole place feel cooler and more alive, and it had that easy weekend-camp energy that actually worked.

  • Strategy: get settled, then spend the better light down by the creek instead of forcing camp photos.
  • Cooking: simple breakfast and coffee worked great here before heading farther up the Rim.
  • Vibe: this is a good campground when you want camping to feel fun, not serious.
