Overview

A big, clean, well-run Rim campground that makes it easy. Tall pines, organized loops, and quick access to the lakes and overlooks.

Canyon Point is not hidden or wild, but that is part of why it works. It is one of the easier Mogollon Rim campgrounds to recommend because it gives you shade, space, and decent access without much drama. If you want a reliable base near Woods Canyon and Willow Springs, this is a good one.

It gets busy for a reason. Summer weekends bring families, trailers, and plenty of movement through the loops, but the campground is big enough that you can still find quieter pockets if you pay attention to site placement.

Why go
Clean developed camping, good shade, and easy access to the Rim lakes and overlooks.
Watch out for
Busy weekends, tighter pads for bigger rigs, and sudden afternoon weather.

If you want quieter mornings, get a site one row off the main traffic and let the trees do the rest.

Getting There

From Payson, take AZ 260 east toward the Rim. Canyon Point is well signed and easy to reach, with paved loops and short spurs once you are inside.

  1. Watch for elk at dawn and dusk on 260. That stretch can get real fast if you are not paying attention.
  2. Show up early on summer weekends. Between campers and lake traffic, the whole area wakes up fast.
  3. If you are towing, it is worth driving the loop once before committing to a tighter back-in.
Camping Info
  • Sites: shaded developed pads that work well for tents and small to medium trailers.
  • Water and toilets: potable water in season and vault toilets.
  • Fires: in rings only when restrictions allow.
  • Lakes: Woods Canyon and Willow Springs are both close enough to make this an easy base camp.
  • Cell: usually better near the highway, less reliable deeper in the loops.
My Notes

Canyon Point is one of those campgrounds that is maybe not exciting, but it is easy to like. It feels organized, cared for, and useful. I would pick this over something rougher if the goal is just to get up on the Rim, stay comfortable, and be close to a bunch of good nearby options.

  • Comfort: good shade helps a lot here, especially if you catch a warm stretch.
  • Cooking: this is an easy place to keep dinner simple and enjoy camp instead of fighting the setup.
  • Photos: the campground itself is fine, but the real payoff is nearby overlooks and evening light through the pines.
