Black Canyon Rim Campground in tall pines on the Mogollon Rim

Mogollon Rim Developed Family Lakes nearby
Overview

A straightforward Rim campground with good shade, developed sites, and quick access to Black Canyon Lake without camping right on top of the traffic.

Black Canyon Rim is one of those places that makes sense. Tall pines, cool temps, developed loops, and an easy position for Black Canyon Lake and the nearby overlooks. It is not trying to be dramatic. It is just a solid base if you want a cleaner, easier campground setup on the Rim.

The payoff here is convenience without being too exposed. You get the cooler weather, the trees, and quick day access to nearby water and Rim views, then come back to a more settled camp.

Why go
Shade, elevation relief, and easy access to Black Canyon Lake and Rim Road viewpoints.
Watch out for
Weekend demand, monsoon gusts, and some tighter back-ins under the trees.

If you want quiet, pick your site for shade and separation first, then use the location for everything else.

Getting There

From Payson or Heber, take AZ-260 and follow the signed turn for Black Canyon Rim. It is an easy approach, which is part of the appeal if you just want to get up on the Rim without dealing with much.

  1. Watch for elk on 260, especially early and late.
  2. Summer weekends bring campground and lake traffic, so earlier arrival helps.
  3. If you have a longer trailer, it is worth scouting the loop before committing.
Camping Info
  • Sites: shaded developed pads that work best for tents and smaller to mid-size rigs.
  • Water and toilets: potable water in season and vault toilets.
  • Fires: in rings only when restrictions allow.
  • Lakes: Black Canyon Lake is close enough to make this a very easy base camp.
  • Cell: usually better near the highway, less reliable farther in.
My Notes

Black Canyon Rim feels practical in the same way a lot of the better Rim campgrounds do. Not some secret, not especially wild, just a good place to stay cool, sleep well, and use the area without overcomplicating the trip.

  • Setup: pick late-day shade and let the site work for you.
  • Rhythm: lake or drive during the day, then back to camp before evening weather builds.
  • Photos: better payoff outside camp itself - trees in blue hour, Rim overlooks in gold light.
